Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy
The Iranian Fisheries Scientific Journal (IFSJ) recognizes the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in scientific research and writing. This policy sets out the journal’s position on the responsible and transparent use of such tools in manuscripts submitted for publication.
1. Authorship
AI tools, including large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, cannot be listed as an author or co-author of a manuscript. Authorship implies responsibilities and accountability that only human authors can assume. All authors must be able to take public responsibility for the content of the work.
2. Disclosure and Transparency
Authors must be transparent about any use of AI tools in the preparation of their manuscript. If AI tools were used for language editing, grammar correction, or improving readability, disclosure is recommended but may not be mandatory for basic tools. However, if AI tools were used for substantive tasks—such as generating text, analyzing data, producing figures or images, or writing code—authors must disclose this in the manuscript.
3. Location of Disclosure
For all article types, the use of AI tools for substantive tasks must be described as a dedicated subsection within the Materials and Methods section, under the subheading “AI-Assisted Technologies.” This subsection should specify:
- The name and version of the AI tool(s) used.
- The specific purpose for which the tool was used (e.g., data analysis, text generation, image creation, literature synthesis).
- A brief explanation of how the output was reviewed and verified by the authors.
If AI tools were used only for basic language editing or grammar correction and not for substantive tasks, a statement in this subsection is recommended but not mandatory. In such cases, authors may instead include a brief note in the Acknowledgments section.
4. Author Responsibility
Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of all content in their manuscript, including any parts generated or assisted by AI tools. AI tools may produce incorrect, incomplete, or biased output; authors must critically review and edit all AI-assisted content.
5. Permitted and Restricted Uses
AI tools may be used to support language editing, reference formatting, literature searches, and data analysis, provided that human oversight is maintained. They must not be used to fabricate or falsify data, generate entire manuscripts without substantial human contribution, or circumvent ethical standards.
6. Images and Figures
AI-generated images or figures should be used only in accordance with the journal’s image policies. If AI-generated visual material is included, its source and the tool used must be clearly disclosed.
7. Non-Compliance
Manuscripts that do not comply with this policy may be rejected or retracted. The journal reserves the right to request additional information about AI use and to verify the integrity of the work.
