Abstract

Data used  in this publication  is a part of a comprehensive  study was carried out jointly between  South  Aquaculture  Research  Center  (SIARC)  and  Kuwait  Institute  for  Scientific Research  (KISR)  on  silver  pomfret  (Pampus  argenteus)  in  2003  to  2005.  The  study  was aimed to collect efficient data from two regions from biological and population parameters of this economically important fish to properly explain its stock situation and ultimately leads to improve  a better  management  program  for  conservation  of  stock  and  yield  sustainability. Monthly  data  collection  on  length  and . biology,  started  since  May  2003  and  ended  by December  2005.  Shrimp  trawl  and  gill  nets  were  used  for  sample  collection  from  the predicted areas in both sea regions. FL of the fish was within the range of 12-34cm, with the dominant length of 18-25cm in Kuwaiti waters. In Khouzestan waters fork length was ranged 14-22cm for the years of2003 and 2004 but  14-26cm for 2005. Strong relationship  between

length and weight in both countries with a scanty difference was observed for this species (R2

=0.989 for Khouzestn, R2 =0.947 for Kuwait). The findings of present study are suggesting that silver pomfret is following an allometric growth pattern in studied area.  Spawning of silver pomfert begin in July and continue till October in Kuwaiti waters but in Khouzestan waters the heights spawning of this fish started in end of May till October. Length  at first maturity of this species in the studied area of Kuwait was found to be 19.6cm FL based on Spearman-Karber method but 23.3cm (FL) based on the logistic model. The parameter was estimated 20.0 c (FL) in Khouzestan waters according to the logistic model.

Abstract

Fecundity rate and spawning season for cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis), a commercially important species in Busheher coastal waters were studied from December 2007 to May 2008. We collected 142 specimens and after their sexuality were 18 males, 3 immatures, 16 first stage pieces, 14 second stage pieces and 91 pieces in third and fourth stages. The assessed biological characteristics such as: Mantle length, weight of total body, Nidamental gland, weight of head, weight of ovary and fecundity rate. We recorded 201.8±6.8mm for mean, 280mm for maximum and 115mm for minimum mantle length. The mean body total weight was 895.8±143g, and the maximum was 2098g, while its minimum was 241.13g. The mean, maximum and minimum Nidamental gland weight was 41.1±18.6, 126.8, and 0.2g, respectively. For the relationship between mantle length (ML, mm) and fecundity we found the linear regression equation: Fecundity = -630.68+5.22ML. The mean, maximum and minimum fecundity rate was 494±131, 1246 and 178, respectively. The results ofthis study showed spawning season for Sepia pharaonis in the coastal waters of Busheher Province to be from the end of February to the end of June.

Abstract

This project was carried out in the year 2003 in Khuzestan province waters to determine the best artificial propagation techniques for mass production of Barbus xanthopterus. The fish is one of the most valuable and economic species in the area. The propagation was started in late March and continued till late April while suitable temperature was 21-24.5 C. A number of 23 female broodstock with mean weight and length 3.85±0.45kg and 64.95±21cm respectively with a sex ratio of 2:1 male to female were used in the process. The amount of hypophysis injection was 4mg/kg weight of fish and two injections with 10-12 h interval to 10:90 were undertaken. Spawning success was 87% in broodstock. Latency period was 15- 17h and the incubation duration was 59-60h in 23-25 C.The fish eggs has a low stickiness and the count of dry and water-absorbed eggs were 480±32 and 287±25g, respectively. In the twice-injected broodstock, the fertilization rate was 77.22±3.1%, the hatching rate was 81.2 ±1.89% and the survival rate was 83.4±2%. Size of the dry and water-absorbed eggs was 1248±45 and 2110±125, respectively. Washing time with fertilization liquid was 10 min for removing stickiness. In the end, 660 thousand larvae were produced and released to earthen ponds for culture.

Abstract

Pharaoh Cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis) is commercially important and native cephalopods in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. In 2013, a total of 150 eggs of Pharaoh Cuttlefish were collected from 20 m depth in about 6 miles south of Lengeh Port and transferred to the laboratory of Mollusks Research Station in Bandar-e Lengeh. Eggs were incubated in temperature of 27.5±0.5 0C (mean ± SD) and salinity of about 37-38 ppt. After about 15±3 days (mean ± SD), eggs were hatched and the mean (±SD) of mantle length and wet weight of new hatched juveniles were 6.1±0.3 mm and 0.15±.04 g, respectively. In the first month, Artemia, Mysid and PL of L. vannamei shrimps were fed to juveniles and in second month it shifted to fish slices. After 30 days, average (±SD) mantle length and wet weight reached to 18.6±0.6 mm and 1.67±0.14 g, respectively. At the age of 60 days they reached to average (±SD) length of 32.3±4.2 mm and average (±SD) weight of 8.00±3.72 g. At the age of 120 days they reached to average (±SD) length of 74.5±11.3 mm and average (±SD) weight of 55.74±13.81 g. The sex was identified on the day of 150, and mate selecting occurred on 180th day, mating and spawning were occurred in days 208 and 210 of rearing period, respectively. Each female laid average (±SD) 185±30 eggs and average (±SD) life spans for female and male were 212±7 and 218±20 days, respectively. Males were bigger than females and the biggest male reached to 157.9 mm in length and 367.10 g in weight. The biggest female reached to 105.1 mm in length and 227.18 g in weight. Results showed that Pharaoh Cuttlefish could easily be cultured under laboratory condition with possibility of rearing to the next generation after spawning.

Abstract

Arabian yellowfin sea bream (Acanthopagrus arabicus) is a candidate for cage culture. In this study to improve spawning performance (in quality and quantity) the effects of using human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogues (LHRH-A2), carp pituitary extract (CPE) and a combination of CPE plus LHRH-A2 in females were investigated. The hormone treatments and control were tested in triplicates. Each replicate was stocked with 30 fish with a sex ratio of 1:1 and the average weights were 675g and 310g for females and males, respectively. In each trial, females were injected twice with the same dose in 24 hours between of either. Spawning occurred in all tanks and the use of all hormones successfully induced spawning in a shorter time. Relative fecundity was found to be significantly elevated in the mix treatment (p<0.05). Fish in the control group and HCG treatment showed the lowest relative fecundity. Buoyant egg percentage was not significantly affected by different hormones. Results of survival rate percentage in 10 and 35 DPH did not show any significant different between treatments and control group (p>0.05). Starvation challenge was designed for 3 DPH larvae. Survival rate of larvae in 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 hours after starting challenge did not differ significantly among treatments (p>0.05). The present study revealed the best spawning performance of A. arabicus was achieved at a combination of CPE plus LHRH-A2, This hormone combination increases the quantity of produced eggs without affecting their quality.

Abstract

Malabar trevally is one of the species of Carangidae family in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, which biological and population characteristics of this species were less been studied . In this regard, reproductive indices such as gonadosomatic, first maturity length, sex ratio, spawning season, absolute and relative fecundity were investigated. Reproduction studies of Malabar trevally (Carangoides malabaricus) were carried out in the waters of Hormozgan province from December 2016 to November 2017. Samples were collected monthly using trawl nets. Total, fork length and weight were measured. In this study, the total samples were 438, out of which 258 were females, 150 males and 30 immature. The minimum and maximum average fish fork length during the different months was 14-34 and 26.42±3.33 cm, respectively. The maturity female fork length (LM50) was 180 mm.  The sex ratio of female to male was 1.72 to 1 which showed a significant difference (P<0.05). Maximum absolute fecundity was 185432±8127 eggs in April and maximum relative fecundity of 570 23 eggs per gram in April. The minimum absolute fecundity was 66542±14197 in September and the minimum relative fecundity of 130 14 eggs per gram in June. The maximum GSI index of female and male fish were calculated 1.8 and 0.68 in March respectively which spawning could be started from April.

Abstract

To investigate spawning time, sexual maturity, and fecundity of kutum, this study was carried out in the Iranian waters of the Caspian Sea during February to April 2019. Samples were taken randomly from the catch composition of 119 beach seines in three provinces of Guilan, Mazandaran, and Golestan. The mean (± SD) fork length and total weight calculated 39.8±5.9 cm and 830.6±360.3 g, respectively. The sex ratio was 1:0.88 (M: F) that was significantly different from 1:1 ratio (p<0.05). Based on the frequency of different sexual maturity stages and the trend of gonadosomatic index (GSI), the peak of the spawning period was the second decade of April. The mean (± SD) absolute and relative fecundity were 45180±12239 and 47.5±8.6 eggs respectively. Absolute fecundity increased by increasing length, weight, and age and had positive and high correlations with these parameters. The length of maturity calculated 36.3 cm (fork length). The results show that the length of maturity and fecundity decreased in the last decade. Fishing pressure and high exploitation, as well as artificial reproduction and release of juveniles to regenerate the stocks of this species, which has caused genetic changes, are among the most important factors in reducing the length of sexual maturity and fecundity. It is recommended to review the fishing and exploitation regulations, to apply time, place, and instrumental restrictions and to provide suitable environmental conditions for natural reproduction and to reduce artificial reproduction and release.

Abstract

In this research, population characteristics and length-based spawning potential ratio (LBSPR) of longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol) were investigated. For this purpose, information was collected from 4 fishing grounds on the coasts of Sistan and Baluchistan Province, including Bris, Pasabandar, Pezam and Kanarak. In total, more than 700 fish were bio-measured in the research stations (catch loading areas), and the growth indices were infinite length L∞=132(cm), annual growth coefficient K=0.39, annual natural mortality M=0.61, the annual fishing mortality F=0.88, the total annual mortality Z=1.49 and the annual exploitation coefficient E=0.59 and the time of zero length to=-0.28 and the amount of growth performance index Φ'=3.84. The ratio of length-based spawning potential ratio (LBSPR) in 2022 for this species was LBSPR=0.21(0.16-0.27). This research showed that this species has medium vulnerability and medium stock status, and also the annual harvest of this species is in the stage of overfishing.
